I had also ticked the box under the general tab in Adobe Reader to " Enable PDF thumbnail previews in Windows Explorer." The large, medium, and small pdf icons had worked fine and had the PDF thumbnail also the preview pane in explorer had the thumbnail preview too but it all disappeared one day out of the blue.
